Transfer Time Always Off? Floating Color, Ink Bleeding, and Poor Fastness May Start Here

In digital sublimation printing, transfer time, temperature, and pressure work together to determine the final result. Time is often the easiest variable to overlook, yet it can cause floating color, ink bleeding, weak fine detail, poor wash fastness, and an unpleasant hand feel.

The correct transfer time is not a single universal number. It must match the ink, fabric, heat-transfer equipment, temperature, and pressure. This guide follows the production logic that INKBANK uses when evaluating a digital textile printing process.

1. First Understand the Principle: What Is Heat Transfer Actually Transferring?

The digital sublimation process follows a clear path. A digital printer prints the design onto transfer paper. The paper is then placed against the fabric and passed through heat-transfer equipment.

During heating, the disperse dye in the sublimation ink changes from a solid directly into a gas. The gas crosses the interface between the transfer paper and the fabric, enters the polyester fiber structure, and returns to a solid state as it cools. The dye is fixed inside the fiber rather than sitting as a film on the surface.

Temperature determines the rate of dye conversion. Time determines how long the dye has to transfer and penetrate. Pressure determines how closely the paper and fabric stay in contact.

These three parameters must be controlled together. If one is outside the process window, the final print can lose color strength, edge definition, fastness, or hand feel.

2. When Transfer Time Is Wrong: Which of These Three Outcomes Are You Seeing?

2.1 Transfer Time Too Short: Floating Color, Weak Fastness, and Missing Detail

If the transfer time is too short, the dye does not have enough time to convert fully and penetrate the fiber. More dye remains near the surface of the fabric.

Common results include:

  • Color that appears to float on the surface and can be scraped or rubbed away

  • White gaps or broken lines in fine text and detailed patterns

  • Noticeable color loss after washing

  • Wash fastness and rub fastness that do not meet the required standard

This problem can be especially costly in bulk production. The defect may not be obvious immediately after transfer, but it appears later during washing, inspection, or customer use. By then, the loss may include material cost, production time, and customer confidence.

2.2 Transfer Time Too Long: Ink Bleeding, Stiffness, and Fabric Damage

If the transfer time is too long, the dye can spread farther than intended. The fabric also receives more heat than necessary.

Common results include:

  • Blurred pattern edges and loss of fine lines or small text

  • Color instability caused by excessive heat exposure

  • A stiff, rough, or shiny hand feel

  • Fiber shrinkage, deformation, or localized scorching

In this situation, the operator may be trying to achieve stronger color but ends up with a softer, less defined image and a lower-quality fabric surface.

2.3 Transfer Time Correct: Complete Penetration, Sharp Detail, and Stable Color

When the transfer time is appropriate, the dye penetrates the fiber structure without over-migrating. The printed pattern keeps clear edges, shows stable color, and has no obvious floating layer. The ink forms a stable bond with the fiber, allowing the print to maintain its appearance through repeated washing. The fabric also retains a softer hand feel without the stiffness or surface residue caused by excessive heat.

3. How Do You Set the Correct Transfer Time? Four Core Rules

3.1 Start With High-Quality Disperse Sublimation Ink

The usable transfer-time window is directly affected by the ink's dye transfer rate and sublimation stability.

For industrial production, a quality sublimation ink should meet three practical requirements:

  1. It should maintain color gamut and jetting stability at high printing speeds, without pauses or inconsistent output that create batch-to-batch transfer differences.

  2. It should release dye efficiently within the intended transfer window. A higher transfer rate helps complete the process without forcing the fabric to remain under heat longer than necessary.

3.2 Match the Transfer Time to the Fabric

The fabric structure and heat tolerance should determine the starting point.

  • Dense 100% polyester fabric often requires a longer transfer-time window. In many industrial heat-transfer operations, a practical starting range is 10-30 seconds.

  • Polyester-cotton blends and nylon usually absorb less dye and tolerate heat differently. Their transfer time may need to be reduced to 5-15 seconds to limit fabric damage.

These ranges are starting points, not universal settings. The exact time depends on the heat-transfer equipment, line speed, fabric weight and construction, paper, ink, temperature, and pressure. A trial print is still required.

3.3 Adjust Time Together With Temperature and Pressure

Transfer time cannot be adjusted in isolation.

When temperature is higher, the dye becomes active more quickly, so the transfer time may be reduced appropriately. When pressure is higher, the transfer paper stays in closer contact with the fabric, so time may also be reduced to avoid over-penetration.

The reverse is also true. Lower temperature or lighter pressure may require a longer dwell time, but simply extending time can create bleeding, stiffness, or heat damage. The correct method is to adjust temperature, pressure, and time as one coordinated system.

3.4 Use a Trial Print as the Baseline

Different machines, fabric lots, paper lots, and ink batches can behave differently. Before bulk production, run a small trial print and check:

  • Whether the color matches the target

  • Whether wash fastness and rub fastness meet the requirement

Adjust one variable at a time and repeat the best setting before releasing it to production.

Transfer time is not something to set by feel, and one parameter set cannot cover every fabric, machine, or production batch. Fabric changes, equipment changes, and material lots change. The process window must change with them.

When floating color, ink bleeding, weak detail, or poor fastness appears, do not simply add heat or pressure. Start with the ink, confirm the fabric, coordinate temperature and pressure, and validate the setting with a trial print.
